Orion Presents at AEHS Conference at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts
Orion’s Berkeley-based project geologist, Scott, attended the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences (AEHS) Foundation and the Sustainable Remediation Forum’s (SURF) 34th Annual East Coast Conference in Amherst, Massachusetts, during October 2018. The conference included several sessions about sustainable remediation. Scott gave a presentation titled Incorporating Sustainability into Remedial Decision Making Led to Case Closure at a Petroleum Site. His presentation detailed a project in which Orion, the client, and the regulatory agency were able to successfully incorporate sustainability into the remedial strategy by focusing on risk assessment and investigation. The results were significant: case closure 4 years earlier than originally anticipated and a 60 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Scott’s presentation showed how prioritizing sustainability in the site management process can result in benefits to the social, environmental, and economic pillars of sustainability while meeting regulatory goals.
Scott also attended talks in other SURF sessions where he learned about green remediation technologies, sustainability evaluation tools, and the growing emphasis on sustainability in remediation. In addition, Scott attended a dinner where he was able to network with other sustainability-minded consultants and industry representatives.
