It’s true, for some people, “you only log once.” But here at Orion, that’s not the case and we know the importance of a good boring log and the skill needed to make one. I mean, how can we design an effective remedial approach if we don’t understand what’s going on beneath our (safety boot-clad) feet? And ask any geologist, there’s two secrets to good soil classification: a righteous Hawaiian shirt and getting your hands dirty. That’s why Orion held an interactive soil classification course in the back warehouse of the Long Beach office in May as part of our Staff Development Program. We brushed off our calibrated soil sample kit from Midwest GeoSciences and got to work. Berkeley-based Professional Geologist Scott dropped knowledge on our technical staff, giving the do’s and do more’s of USCS soil classification. Sedimentation tests? Check. Dilatancy? Done. And don’t fret; elastic or plastic, soil isn’t just for the geo’s here at Orion. Even the engineers and scientists got involved and barely rolled their eyes. It was a great way for our experienced staff to hone their skills as well as for exposing our newer staff to different soil types before hitting the field. There was even a swag bag because everyone knows that you’re doing it wrong if you don’t have a putty knife.
- Our fearless staff hard at work.
- Calibrated soil sample.
- Scott dropping that knowledge.
- Soil sample with field classification sheets.
- Sean loves soil!
- The more you log, the more you know.
