Project:
Tire Service Centers
Bottom Line: Characterized brake dust as a non-hazardous waste at tire centers throughout California and confirmed that appropriate waste management practices were in place.
Summary of Project
A Sacramento-based regulatory agency required the client to characterize “brake dust” at its tire service centers throughout California.
- Collected a representative sampling of brake dust at 16 tire service centers throughout California, which were carefully selected to provide a cross-section of the various automobile models serviced in the state. Examined the centers’ brake dust collection and storage methods.
- Collected the metal dust residue samples and submitted them to an analytical laboratory for RCRA hazardous characterization. Evaluated the results, which indicated that the metal residues in brake dust were non-hazardous, based on research into State guidelines for managing such residues.
- Confirmed that the client’s existing practices and procedures met the guidelines and could be continued. Submitted a letter report to the agency for review.
