Project:
Former Brick Manufacturing Plant, Landfill, and Oil Field
Bottom Line: Helped a city government assess the environmental risks at an apartment complex property previously used for manufacturing, landfilling, and oil production.
Summary of Project
The 5.3-acre site formerly contained several operations including a brick manufacturing plant, crude oil sumps, auto repair shop, and sewage pump station. Soil was excavated for brick production and the excavations were landfilled with debris and waste. In addition, the site is adjacent to a historical municipal landfill. An apartment complex comprising 33 two-story buildings currently occupies the site.
- Conducted a Phase 1 environmental site assessment and identified the historical activities and recognized environmental conditions described above. Reviewed historical aerial photographs, insurance company maps, city building department documents, and agency databases.
- Prepared and implemented a work plan for a Phase 2 site investigation including drilling and soil sampling and a soil gas survey.
- Coordinated activities with a geotechnical consultant to conduct subsurface investigations simultaneously and reduce the number of soil borings.
- Prepared a health and safety plan to protect workers and residents during intrusive investigation activities.
